It will  be relevant to municipalities, businesses and not-for-profits.
  • Marnie Vyff of the Mountain Lakes Shade Tree Commission and Manager of the Mountain Lakes Organic Coop will also present on Municipal Composting. She will provide approaches to integrate composting into a municipality’s recycling program, reducing solid waste costs and providing other benefits to residents.

Event logistics:

Wayne Public Library, 1-4 pm, Saturday, May 1st

Saturday, May 1, 2010, 1-4 pm with Marnie Vyff on municipal composting and Randy Solomon on the incredibly successful Sustainable Jersey program. Wayne Public Library, Wayne, NJ. RSVP to [email protected].

We invite our speakers to share what it has taken them to become a leader in the sustainability movement. What they find works/doesn’t work in getting sustainability initiatives rolling, from a leadership point of view. What it takes to shift the paradigm for the target audience they’re working with. And what’s next for them, in growing their own leadership capabilities.

Program for May 1st:

In this session we will be talking about Sustainable Municipal solutions.

Marnie Vyff will speak on how to integrate composting into your rural, suburban or urban municipality. With State and National pressures to curb waste, municipalities are turning to composting programs and finding their municipal solid waste costs decrease. We will look at the benefits, and how typical environmental, social, political, and economic hindrances can be managed. Marnie is a Commissioner with the Mountain Lakes Shade Tree Commission and has run an Organic Produce Cooperative since 2001. She is a Partner at ecoLOGIC-design, LLC which provides graphic design and eco-marketing services. Marnie has worked with organizations including The Sierra Club, the Danish Environmental Ministry, Becton Dickinson and Scandia. Marnie has a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Rhode Island School of Design.

Randall E. Solomon will speak on the issues of the leadership and institutional challenges of greening municipalities. Randy is one of the founding partners and creators of the nationally acclaimed municipal certification program, Sustainable Jersey.  He is the founder and former Executive Director of the New Jersey Sustainable State Institute.  Randy’s policy experience includes positions as a policy advisor on sustainable development for the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, director of the States Campaign for the Resource Renewal Institute in San Francisco, and policy director for the non-profit New Jersey Future. He has a BS in Biology from the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and an MS in Public Policy from the Bloustein School at Rutgers University. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in public policy at the Bloustein School, focusing on the social and institutional factors that govern the success of statewide and community sustainability efforts. He writes and speaks frequently on sustainable development, land use policy, and using indicators in public decision making.

Leadership Quotes

"Nearly every man who develops an idea works it up to the point where it looks impossible, and then he gets discouraged. That's not the place to become discouraged."
(Thomas A. Edison—thanks to Regan Caton)

"Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” (G.B. Shaw)

"There is the true joy of life: to be used by a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; to be thoroughly worn out before being thrown on the scrap heap; to be a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that life will not devote itself to making you happy." (G.B. Shaw)

"Leadership is a privilege to better the lives of others. It is not an opportunity to satisfy personal greed." (Mwai Kibaki, President of Kenya - thanks to Christine Comaford, Rules for Renegades)
