New Programs in 2010

Posted by Admin under: Forum .

Well, here we are, a day or so away from a new year and indeed a new decade – one that like every other in the foreseeable future will need to be a decade of sustainable development.(1) To put it simply, from here on every human being will be impacted by issues of sustainability as long as we continue to exist on this planet, and we’d better get used to managing our relationship to nature (and as a consequence also our relationship to each other) in a way that is regenerative rather than degenerative.

We’re planning a new push for transformational leadership in sustainability in 2010 – with meetings, new members, new programs, and new collaborative initiatives. We have a kickoff event planned for Sunday, January 3, at 3 p.m., where we’ve invited a large number of people over to our place for a “movie and a potluck for the planet.” We’re planning to show the made-for-TV-movie Earth 2100, which we thought was pretty good, but surprisingly few people got to see it. (For details, email me at [email protected].)

Then we have meetings scheduled for Saturday, January 9, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the Iselin branch of the Woodbridge Library; and for Saturday, January 16, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at a location to be announced. We also have our 1-day course scheduled for January 23 at FDU’s Madison campus.

There’s still a lot of room for improvement and for evolution in our work on the Sustainable Leadership Forum, but our commitment is to support leaders in sustainability in every field and area of society, and indeed anyone who chooses to take a stand for changing the course of our unsustainable development on the planet. If you are interested, we invite you to attend our events, sign up as a member, enroll in the 1-day course, and join us in this ongoing adventure.

(1) We are actually midway in the UN’s Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, which runs from 2005 to 2015. But now we need a lot more than education, we also need concerted action, by each and every one of us, to change humanity’s relationship to the earth.

Leadership Quotes

"Nearly every man who develops an idea works it up to the point where it looks impossible, and then he gets discouraged. That's not the place to become discouraged."
(Thomas A. Edison—thanks to Regan Caton)

"Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” (G.B. Shaw)

"There is the true joy of life: to be used by a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; to be thoroughly worn out before being thrown on the scrap heap; to be a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that life will not devote itself to making you happy." (G.B. Shaw)

"Leadership is a privilege to better the lives of others. It is not an opportunity to satisfy personal greed." (Mwai Kibaki, President of Kenya - thanks to Christine Comaford, Rules for Renegades)
