Sustainable Neighborhood & Community Conversations (III)

Posted by Admin under: Community Development; Events; Neighborhoods; Resiliency; Suburbs; Sustainability .

In view of the impacts of the storm(s), and the fact that we’re having a Solar Open House at our home today from 2-6, we’re postponing our regular monthly conversation for this month until next week (Saturday, November 17, 10-12 EST).

I hope you will all be able to participate on that date, as we do in fact have a number of new developments and initiatives we can discuss — and we’d like to hear your latest updates as well. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to hear from all of you, and sharing your experiences of working to transform society in many different ways.

We believe it makes sense for us to focus on “making our own neighborhoods and communities more sustainable” as both a philosophy and a sustainable business objective: it’s where the new opportunities are. This is why Victoria is working on the UFC Sustainable Community Partnership Banking model, here in New Jersey (as well as in New York and around the country, because we could use one of these in every community); and why I’m working primarily on the development of the NJ PACE program, to help launch a wave of local revitalization and renewal.

I’m also currently working to consolidate a number of resources and opportunities through a community action portal, similar to what the Center for Neighborhood Technologies has accomplished in putting together CNTEnergy for Chicago.

I look forward to sharing our thinking and our progress in this work with you at 10 a.m. on the 17th:

Leadership Quotes

"Nearly every man who develops an idea works it up to the point where it looks impossible, and then he gets discouraged. That's not the place to become discouraged."
(Thomas A. Edison—thanks to Regan Caton)

"Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” (G.B. Shaw)

"There is the true joy of life: to be used by a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; to be thoroughly worn out before being thrown on the scrap heap; to be a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that life will not devote itself to making you happy." (G.B. Shaw)

"Leadership is a privilege to better the lives of others. It is not an opportunity to satisfy personal greed." (Mwai Kibaki, President of Kenya - thanks to Christine Comaford, Rules for Renegades)
